Bavarian Apple Torte

** I had written up this post last night, hit “Publish” and WordPress said that it was published. WordPress lies. So, here we go again…

Once upon a time, the neighbors across the street held an Oktoberfest party. I volunteered to make a dessert and searched all over for an appropriately themed dessert. I don’t remember where I finally found this, but our neighbors told me it was the best dessert they ever had…as did some of the other guest. Methinks it was really the alcohol talking but I will take the compliment.

You can try it out yourself and tell me what you think!

Pastry:
1/2 C butter
1/3 C sugar
1/4 t vanilla
1 C flour

* cream butter and sugar until fluffy
* blend in vanilla
*add flour, mix well
* spread dough on bottom and 1.5″ up sides of 9″ springform pan

Filling:
* 1 8 oz pkg cream cheese, room temp
* 1/4 C sugar
* 1 egg
* 1/2 t vanilla

* mix softened cream cheese and sugar until well-blended
* beat in egg and vanilla
* pour into pastry-lined pan

Apple topping:
* 4 C thin, peeled apple slices
* 1/3 C sugar
* 1/2 t cinnamon
* 1/4 C sliced almonds

* toss apples with sugar and cinnamon and spoon over cream cheese layer
* sprinkle almonds over top and bake at 450F for 10 minutes (might have to cover top after a while because the almonds can burn)
* reduce oven temperature to 400F and bake 25 minutes more
* loosen cake from rim of pan
* cool, remove rim entirely, and chill until serving

Note: I suggest placing the springform pan on a baking sheet (with sides) because springform pans have a habit of leaking
