Squirrel Girl – too much effort

Before I launch into today’s post, I want to remind all my creative friends that by decree of Kirk (Dumb Sketch Daily blog) and me, Sept. 25 is the first Art Selfie Day. Please join in the fun! You can use any medium and put your own take on this however you want. No rules!

Today’s drawing took far, far too much time than I intended to. I blame it all on Tom C. who gave me “Squirrel Girl” in that silly game to populate Facebook with comic book art to combat the negativity there. I couldn’t just pull an image off the internet, could I? Noooo. I had to go draw my own interpretation.

squirrelgirlThis is the final piece done with the Art Studio app on the iPad. The reason it took so long was because I started the sketch on paper and it was all sorts of wonky.

FullSizeRender(9)That happens when you don’t use a model and you’re relying on your memory to make a pose (and when you’re not in a proper posture for drawing; slouched in a comfy chair is not proper posture)…plus, I had a scribble at the lower left corner that was not part of the piece.

For those of you who aren’t geeks, yes, Marvel did come up with this character. What were they thinking?

  21. If Marvel didn’t come up with her, I would. I haven’t seen any of her comic appearances, either. But, when I learned of the character, I took immediate interest. Though, without some sane explanation, she does seem like a silly character. I’d picture her in a Howard the Duck comic.

    Nice color work, but what happened to her boots? I thought the thing in the corner might be her bag (to stash her civilian clothes).

She’s definitely a character I’d imagine with Howard the Duck. 😀 When I was doing the final drawing, I decided I liked it better without the boots, almost like her legs were just natural squirrel-ish limbs. Heh. As I said to my friend who imposed the character on me, “it’s my re-imagining; I’m drawing her my way!” 😉 And, hmmm, that’s a good idea: a bag to stash her civilian clothes…

  23. Did you ever see Bonkers with that deer girl named Fawn? Or, Duck Tales or Darkwing Duck. I can see Squirrel Girl in those line-ups.

    But, aren’t her legs covered in stockings? I would have her bare-legged, too, if she wasn’t a fashion icon. Actually, now that I think of it, I may have read some random clip on Squirrel Girl. She might have been a model.

  30. We’re really annoyed at the squirrels right now because they (and crows) ate every last apple off our trees. We had a decent number of apples, too. Grrr. So, I hear you about squirrels not being your favorite. :}

  32. LOL! I honestly have no idea what she’s covered in…I have never read any of the comics and drew this after scanning through Google images to get an approximate sense of her. 🙂

    I’ve not seen (or heard of) Bonkers. I’m afraid I’m not quite up to speed (heh…kind of a joke based on your profile pic) on the more obscure comics. The other favorite character of the friend who assigned me Squirrel Girl is Moon Knight and I have never read anything on him either. :}

  47. I’ve never read Moon Knight, but the costume rocks. Like him, I like the comic heroine Ghost’s costume (who looks a bit like Moon Knight) though her story is a tad scary and I can’t recall what company made that comic.

  49. 🙂 That’s how I feel about so many comic book characters. It’s partly why I am dying to have/attend a hero costume party…not the usual Halloween party of creeps and gross monstrosities. I can look at one fine piece of artwork and daydream the day away…

  50. Yes! I agree. I’ve been wanting to put together a Green Lantern costume ever since a friend made me a Green Lantern ring. But I want the costume to be perfect and a work of art in itself…I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it (and wondering if I have the sewing skills to pull it off). I probably won’t have time to get it done by this year. Maybe next….

  51. I would love to make a Green Lantern costume, too…and go with a female friend as Jade or another member of the Green Lantern Corps. or whatever you call them. I keep dabbling with the idea of making a ring but never get around to it. Plus, I am not a big fan of wearing jewelry of any kind.

    Yea, I have zero sewing skills. I made a ghetto white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland costume with pieces I bought online and a handmade pocket watch which looked like it was carved from a tree. I had fun with it but felt a little deranged in the public eye.

    I have completing a suit of Iron Man armor on my To Do list, too.

  53. You probably won’t see me posting any pictures of costumes I made unless I dig up those white rabbit pictures. 🙂 But, you can look for other anecdotes and artwork that may be comic book-related.

    I am unfamiliar with those two names.

  54. Katma was in one of the Justice League episodes from the incarnation on Cartoon Network from about 10+ years ago. But I had to go look up another female GL who wasn’t dead. 😀

    Maybe you should dig up and post the White Rabbit pics? LOL!

  55. Ah, I looked Katma up…she looks like something between the same species as the alien that gave Hal Jordan his ring and the bad guy with the thin mustache that takes the yellow ring for some time to pester Hal.

    I would, but then I’d probably have to skin and boil myself. 🙂 I think they are exclusive viewing material for true friends. Even family heckled me too much.

    I don’t like people with dark pink/red skin. Some of these ladies’ pics are scary for that reason. But, they look like Latin and/or Indian versions of the American hero. Soranik likes to flash a lil more skin. Neither she nor Katma has great hair except in a few pics. What is that spot on Soranik’s cheek?

  58. LOL! I have no freakin’ idea! I can’t keep up with all the millions of characters in comic books. I have the DC Comics Encyclopedia and it thick and mind-bogglingly full of minutia. I can’t imagine working for them and having to study up on all their characters…

Just thinking of all the big time and small time costumed characters…like seeing any crowd at a Comic Con standing outside together on the stairs…or one of those comic encyclopedia volumes with two hundred or so characters somehow penned by one guy on the cover…just makes my brain see the blue screen of…..zzzzz….

    It’s a great resource, though, right? ‘Seems you’re more DC and I am more Marvel.

  60. I started out DC (watching the cheesy Adam West Batman shows as a child), but in my late teens, I fell in love with the X-Men and that was it for me. I still like DC stuff, but given a choice, I will pick Marvel any day! I just haven’t found a Marvel encyclopedia yet (though I haven’t looked very hard; I found the DC one at Costco…it was a good price so I had to buy it). 🙂

  61. I used to love that old Batman show and was inspired to make clay mice after seeing the Pied Piper episode (or was it Catwoman with the robot mice?). I found a book at the library that showed you how to make your own dough/clay and mice that matched the ones on the show.

    I grew up with Batman, fell head over heels in love with Linda Carter and her young “sister” on Wonder Woman, ran from the TV when Bill Bixby’s eyes paled and that creepy music played…and a whooole lotta cartoons, mostly DC and independent hero companies. But, I do recall watching several hours of the original Spider-Man cartoon (seeing Peter frequent that disco/club to think with montages of strobe light scenes, changing colors) and Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (again, crushing on the red-haired female character).

    My first taste of X-Men were my brother’s comics which kinda freaked me out. But, once I saw an animated special (prior to the 1992 cartoons), I started to look into the series and, yep, one more time, fell in love with a redhead, Jean Grey, in the Phoenix saga.

    I don’t have any big volumes other than a Marvel history book someone got for me which is rather huge, comes with two frame-able prints and is chock full of useful info from Stan Lee’s roots to roughly 2009. I can get lost in that thing easily. I also have a few issues of the older comic versions that detailed various heroes’ weapons and powers in alphabetical order.

  62. I think the key factor that has turned me away from DC would probably be heroes like Superman who wear their underwear outside their spandex. Though, even as a lil kid, I didn’t think about that and really enjoyed Chris Reeves in the role…until he lost his powers and looked like a skeleton in that machine…and that freaky robot lady in the third? one with Richard Pryor. I used to make Superman sandwiches, following a guide my family got from a magazine. But, with age, came great adjustment to my outlook. I didn’t like the quality of DC artwork–compared to Marvel’s–either. But, I can find good and bad in both companies. DC has some great ideas…just in more silly costumes, usually. While Marvel can be more scary and a lil lewd at times.

  63. Oh, gosh, I loved Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman, too (probably not in the same way you loved her though 😉 ). And Debra Winger as her sister…what a riot! I think Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno (I totally botched that spelling, I’m sure) make a great Banner-Hulk team but I never watched that show for some reason. For crushing on, I’d have to say it was always Batman, even after I defected to Camp Marvel. 🙂 That said, holy cow, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine gets my heart beating a little faster. LOL!

    Your Marvel history book sounds amazing and I now want to look for it so I can buy it!

  64. I barely remember the Chris Reeves movies anymore – just bits and pieces (Terrence Stamp as Zod; flying backwards to reverse time…so silly a device). I thought he made a lovely Superman though. 🙂

  65. hehe I watch the old shows even now (as they re-air on “retro TV) and find myself looking at them slightly differently. I notice flaws I didn’t see before and/or things I don’t like as much/the same way.

    Yeah, Debra Winger. She had a goofy wardrobe, but MAN she was in great physical shape. 🙂

    No, Lyle Wagoner (if that’s how you spell his name) was a riot. Just how he is displayed in the intro is funny.

    I couldn’t watch the old Hulk show as a kid because it scared the crap out of me. Now, I watched a good chunk of it not long ago (maybe two years ago) and didn’t freak out as much. There were a few rather weird, even creepy moments (like one in which he couldn’t fully change and was trapped as a sort of halfway gray hulk). But, a number of the changes were just plain comical (like one in which he splits a biker helmet in two after being knocked off a borrowed motorbike).

    Yes, yes, Hugh Jackman is a handsome guy who looks really gay doing musicals though he can pull off a superhero half his size… And, his name just happens to sound like a porn star. 😛

    I still crush on Yvonne Craig (Batgirl) and all the old Catwoman’s…aside from Eartha Kitt, maybe, though I did enjoy her famous purr. But, even the old Catwoman’s look a lil weird to me, now. I guess I’ve always liked the idea of a woman in a slimming costume, tall boots and an eye mask…even at age four.

  66. Actually, I thought flying around the world to reverse its rotation was a brilliant concept. After all, in astrology, they talk about “retrogrades” (when Mars, in particular, is somehow reversing its movement and having dramatic effects). If his flight didn’t reverse time, it might have, at least, changed minds or impacted the future.

    Yea, he was a good looking guy who didn’t make you think about the silly costume so much.

  67. Ah, but I have an above average science background (with special interest in physics) and I write science fiction so I’m hyper-aware of when devices (or scenarios) are not remotely plausible. 🙂

    Reeves was exceptionally good looking; I crushed on him through most of high school (I remember watching the movie with my cousins when it first came out in theater in ’79)! 🙂

    I watched so much Twilight Zone and Tales From The Crypt and other movies and shows like that that nothing in the comic universes ever scared me (though the Brood does a bit because it’s so much like the aliens in Alien). 🙂

    I loved Lyle Wagoner on The Carol Burnett Show! He was a bit of a stiff (but handsome) Steve on Wonder Woman.

    Eww, no. Neither of those appeal to me. Occasionally, I’ll watch a Twilight Zone, now. But, as a kid, that too creeped me out. The music did, anyway.

    I liked the Alien films…just not the face huggers. I still quote Ripley from the one with the little girl regularly.

    I mean really. His middle name should be Extra-large.

    The beauty of science is that there is so much more to discover, but there are definitely implausibilities as dictated by the physical laws of this universe. New discoveries don’t usually violate those laws. It’s more like finding a new side to a cube (as an ant crawling along the surface of a cube) versus finding oneself on a six dimensional polyhedral when one is crawling on the surface of a three dimensional cube. LOL!

    Nope, no Lois for this guy. ‘Course, I’m no tall, dark and handsome, anyway. I seem to be more like the animated Green Arrow. With my wit and fiery morals, anyway.

    But, who says we even know the “laws” for sure? In ancient times, such knowledge came from the gods; and to say one knew better than a god was certain death.

  75. Yea, I wasn’t crazy about Agents at first, but it firmed up in good time…and then started to fall apart again when a certain agent went rogue. It has its ups and downs.

    Come on, that was gold, right?:P Hugh Extra-Large Jackman. I think he was the missing link in Magic Mike.

  79. Arrow I have not given a fair chance, yet. And, as for the Flash, sure, it has its share of baby-faced people running a high tech facility. But, it’s not all bad. I really like how they sort of end the show before ending the show. And, Barry’s not terrible. I just get annoyed with how he has to ask how fast to run every time he meets a new foe. Really? You just go as fast as feels necessary. How are you going to stick to a speed limit if you don’t have a visor like Iron Man with a digital display?

  83. ALL THE TIME! Oh, geez, guys, this new meta-human is just so scary. How fast should I run to defeat him/her? According to my calculations… Bleh! It just sounds like a weak attempt to invoke teamwork and scientific research, geek support. It’s okay to be a geek, and you can be part of a team; see how here. Whatever. Yay, geek squad! Just run, Barry. Just fricken run and then apply some other skill like creating a tornado or whatever works. It’s not about the running; it’s what you do with it. [I say all this after playing a Justice League video game in which you learned new skills for Barry as you advanced.]

    Gritty Avengers movies? Those movies aren’t any grittier than a kid’s hands from a sandbox. Guardians of the Galaxy had more grit and a disappointing soundtrack (though I liked the concept of the old tape player being key to the guy’s confidence/comfort and a means of his mother to reach him). And, nothing new, so far, can I compare to the old Batman show. That show explains why Adam West is now the weird iconic voice of Family Guy. It was so over the top at times. And, I can almost smell the old-fashion sexism/gender roles.

  85. I’d only seen a maybe 2 episodes of Family Guy a few years ago…was Adam West always on it or is he playing a new character?

    Gritty as in darker and not just about “does Iris love me or doesn’t she” which is about as low as soap operas. LOL!

    Gotham the TV series is far grittier than the rest. And, even that has a weird kiddy quality to the dialogue…though many of the scenes are very adult/unsettling.

    Yea, the whole Iris thing is rather soap opera-ish without the “I just have to take your clothes off and toss your hair every week…not for you and me, for the ratings, my dear, the ratings. Come. Let’s make hot, steamy passion so one of us can get an Emmy next summer.”

  88. Well, that’s a fun factoid about West and American Dad that I didn’t know (since we don’t watch it). 🙂 We put the first season of Gotham on Netflix so will give it try. My sister likes it.

  89. Gotham gives as good as it gives bad. It’s another revision of the original material. So, expect some HUH? when things don’t match up to what you may know of the previous incarnations. It seems another writer is having a field day with rewriting the origins. Some of the acting is corny.

  90. There was another series that was a re-envisioning of the Batman world…I can’t remember what it’s called for the life of me because it was probably on close to 15 years ago, with Barbara Gordon as Oracle. Maybe it was Huntress?

  92. Ohhh…Birds of Prey. I loved that show at the start. But, near its demise, I grew to dislike the young blonde playing Black Canary. I couldn’t stand her voice. And, she was a sort of “Baby Spice” before, I think, Spice Girls ever existed. But, I liked Oracle and looooved Huntress.

  94. I didn’t think I would like it at first. It seemed a tad “girl power.” But, I fell in love with Huntress from the start; and Oracle wasn’t bad, either. I had first seen her in this odd independent film called “Film Hero,” I think. I got through one season, I think. And then, they introduced the “new girl” Black Canary, and she was sooo young. I think she was younger than these “kids” you see on The Flash and Arrow. She reminded me a bit of that dorky blonde Miss Smoke with the dark frames in Arrow…who looks ridiculous firing a machine gun in the recent commercials.

    Anyway…so after about 4 episodes of baby Black Canary, I guess I got tied up with some other show and came back to find out Birds of Prey had been cancelled to my dismay. That may have been the same year The Tick was on, and that only lasted about 7 episodes before they pulled it. That was a decently weak comedy show.

    Ah, The Tick…we enjoyed the cartoon version for a bit but never really got into the live action show. Can’t remember why. It was silly fun, the cartoon. LOL!

  96. I adore Liz Vassey. My sis likes the guy who played Deflatermouse. I have the SNES video game and finally beat it about a year ago. I have another copy that was faulty; so I couldn’t get far in the game. Sooo many ninja and clowns.
