The tomatoes overheard me saying that we’d likely only be able to can 3 batches of sauce this year and rallied themselves. I just spent 1.5 hours washing and straining these on the counter with Son2 (and I’ve collapsed on the couch while it’s simmering on the stove…meanwhile Son2 is out on the tractor mowing; what is it like to be 17 and full of energy again?)
That was nice of your crop of tomatoes to be so accommodating. And good thing you have someone with tons of energy helping out.

Accommodating? You mean ornery, Monica? 😉 Yeah, Son2 is so helpful.

I’ve thought about making sauce from scratch, but haven’t actually gotten to the execution bit. Wow! I’m truly impressed, Teresa.

Thanks, Robin! This is basic sauce with no seasoning so it’s versatile (for cooking Indian or Italian or whatever). One year, we canned about 80 quarts of sauce. This year won’t be quite as many, which is both good and bad. :}

I have a very similar picture in my gallery. I canned 60 quarts of tomatoes and had soup ingredients for the next two years. Good not to forget how to do this, I’m thinking.

Wow!! They look amazing! Good for you, putting up so much of your own food, best way to kiss GMOs and preservatives goodbye! :))))

Homegrown is almost always tastier, too! But, it is a lot of work…and we’re getting old and tired. :}

Yay! Isn’t it great to have a stock of homegrown and home-canned foods, Shirley? You probably did all the canning by yourself, too, didn’t you? That is amazing. Ours is more of a family affair. I wash (tomatoes, jars/lids, the equipment, etc), the kids do the straining-processing, hubby does the cutting, cooking down and the actual canning.

I love homemade sauce from scratch. I’ve been devouring an Amish Trilogy right now and this certainly reminds me of my book. Yummy!

Tomatoes are fairly easy to can; you only need a steam or water bath canner (less acidic foods need a pressure canner). 🙂 Hope you’ll get to do some canning!

What fun, Pat! Do you have any Amish markets near by where you can get some homemade goodies from them? 🙂

I hope so, too! before I read your post, we resorted to giving them away! 🙂

Canning them will ensure that you’ll have your own tomatoes during the winter! 🙂

I live in Ohio, where there are two very large Amish communities. I don’t live close, but there are some Amish and many beautiful Amish furniture stores. Need to take a drive into the heart of the community in NE Ohio.
